EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a gilt button from the 9th Regiment of Bengal Lancers, dating back to pre-1901. Created by Jennens and Company in London, this exquisite button features crossed lances, unit initials (A BLA), and is topped with a regal crown. The 9th Bengal Lancers originated from Hodson's Horse, an irregular cavalry unit established by Brevet Major William Hodson during the Indian Mutiny in the mid-19th century. Evolving into the 9th Bengal Cavalry and adopting lances as their weapon of choice in 1885, this regiment played significant roles in various campaigns. They served valiantly during the Sudan campaign between 1885 and 1886, as well as on the North West Frontier from 1895 to 1898. Their contributions extended even further when they participated in World War One on both the Western Front and Palestine. In a historic turn of events, the amalgamation of the 9th Hodson's Horse with the10th Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers took place in 1921. This merger resulted in forming a new regiment known as the4th Duke of Cambridge's Own Hodson's Horse just one year later. Following India's independence, this esteemed force retained its founder’s name within India’s armored forces. Preserved within Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection at London’s National Army Museum, this remarkable photograph captures not only an artifact but also commemorates a rich history filled with bravery and dedication to duty.
