EDITORS COMMENTS
In the 19th century, school battalions were a common sight in France, thanks to the Jules Ferry Act of 1882. These battalions were organized under the supervision of the Ministries of Public Education, War, and Interior, with municipalities financing and overseeing the training of child soldiers. The exercises took place on Thursdays and Sundays, providing young students with military training alongside their regular education.
This print captures an unidentified school battalion at the end of the 19th century. Uniformed schoolchildren can be seen performing military exercises in front of their school, under the watchful eye of their master. Armed with miniature rifles equipped with bayonets and proudly holding a flag, these young boys embody discipline and patriotism as they engage in this unique form of learning.
The image is a testament to a bygone era when education was intertwined with militaristic ideals. It serves as a reminder of how different educational practices were in the past compared to today's standards. The dedication and commitment shown by these children highlight their willingness to learn and grow through unconventional means.
Overall, this print offers a fascinating glimpse into history and showcases the evolution of educational practices over time.
