EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a magnificent chasuble, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship and intricate detailing of Italian and English design. Created between 1475-1499 in Italy, this velvet garment was later altered in the 1700s-1799 in England, adding to its rich history and evolution.
The chasuble features vibrant red silk velvet adorned with elaborate embroidery of stylized lilies and other flowers using silk floss, metal threads, and spangles. The ornate orphreys at the center front and back are crafted from blue silk velvet with embroidered figures of angels and saints like St. Peter and St. Anne.
The meticulous workmanship is evident in the various stitching techniques employed such as spit stitch, padded satin stitch, raised-work, couched silk, and metal threads. The garment has been reshaped into a spoon-shape or fiddleback style with edges bound in ten-strand metal thread plait.
This piece not only serves as a beautiful example of medieval textile art but also highlights the cultural exchange between Italy and England during that period. It stands as a testament to the skillful hands that created it centuries ago, preserving their legacy for generations to come.
