Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery ; Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Food and Fruits of Empire, original set" by William Nicholson takes us back to a pivotal era in British history. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933, this artwork was part of a poster campaign aimed at promoting sales of goods from the British Empire. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery, this collection showcases over 200 artist-designed posters that were intended to transform Britons into conscious consumers of Empire-made products. The strong images depicted on these posters provide glimpses into the diverse people, places, and products within the vast territories under British rule. However, viewing these artworks through a contemporary lens raises thought-provoking questions about the legacies left behind by the Empire. While they serve as historical artifacts reflecting an important chapter in Britain's past, some may find discomfort in their underlying beliefs or implications. Nonetheless, this particular photograph captures our attention with its vibrant depiction of food and fruits from across the empire. It serves as a reminder of how intertwined Britain once was with its colonies and dominions when it came to trade and consumption. As we admire this image captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, let us reflect upon both the positive contributions made during that time period as well as acknowledge any complexities or challenges associated with it.
