EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the frontispiece to "Steps to the Temple" by Richard Crashaw, engraved by J. Cross in 1648. The artwork, created by an anonymous English School artist from the 17th century, is a part of a private collection. Richard Crashaw, an esteemed Metaphysical poet hailing from England, authored this renowned collection of religious and secular poems while living in religious exile in France. Published initially in 1646, this edition from 1648 is an expanded version of his work. Crashaw's father was a staunch anti-Catholic divine named Dr William Crashaw. During the tumultuous period of the English Civil War, Richard faced expulsion from his college position and sought refuge in Italy where he eventually converted from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism. The image itself portrays elements deeply rooted in baroque literature and lyric poetry. It features columns reminiscent of church interiors alongside architectural details that exude grandeur and reverence for worship. The presence of worshippers engaged in prayer adds a sense of serenity and devotion to the composition. Bridgeman Images has preserved this remarkable piece as part of their fine art collection, allowing us to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic beauty today.
