ArrAabida Bridge (Ponte da Arrabida in Portuguese) is a bridge over the Douro River in Portugal, linking the city of Oporto with Vila Nova de Gaia.
This bridge is one of six that are existing in the city of Oporto. Since the 1930s it was necessary to create alternatives to the old bridge of Don Luis Maria Pia and to respond to the increasing flow of traffic in this area.
It is the most downstream bridge across the Douro River, just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. It carries 6 lanes of European route E01.
At the time of its construction in 1963, was the largest arch bridge in the world reinforced concrete. The total length of its platform is 614.6 m and has a width 26.5 m. His vain is 270 m and 52 m shaft, this arch formed by two parallel hollow ribs, 8m wide connected by longitudinal reinforcement and transversales.2
Responsible for its design and construction engineer Edgar Cardoso was Antonio Mesquita who was assisted by the architect Ignacio Fernandes Peres and engineer JoseFrancisco de Azevedo e Silva.
