Coat of arms 17th century Astry and Davison
This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes (Britannia), an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work - starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in groups of five. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 9 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 283 Richard ASTRY of Huntington in Huntingtonfshire Gent. (Huntingdon in Huntingdonshire) 284 Mr. Timothy DAVISON of New Caftle upon Tine in Northumberland Merchant (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) More from the same coat-of-arms series (many more via blue link)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a piece of history from the 17th century - a copperplate engraving featuring the coat of arms of Astry and Davison. The image is part of a roll of arms from Richard Blome's Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. These coats of arms represent individuals who contributed to the completion of this remarkable work, starting with King Charles II. The page on display here, folio 9, presents two coats of arms among the collection. In old English script, "ans" was written as a longs (which resembles an "f"), while "ss" appeared as "fs". Additionally, abbreviations like "com" were used for county names. The first coat belongs to Richard Astry, a gentleman hailing from Huntington in Huntingdonshire. The second belongs to Mr. Timothy Davison, a merchant residing in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Northumberland. This antique print not only offers insight into British culture and traditional practices but also serves as an acknowledgment and symbol of friendship between contributors to Blome's Britannia project. Its ornate design and meticulous craftsmanship make it a true testament to the artistry prevalent during that era. Whether you appreciate historical publications or admire intricate decorations such as these armorial symbols, this print transports you back in time with its rich heritage and elegant aesthetics.
