11 August: A Day of Significant Events in History On this day in 1843, in Afghanistan, General Sir William Stevenson and Mr. Lepel Griffin met with the new Ameer, Abdurrahman Khan, outside Cabul. This historic encounter marked a turning point in Anglo-Afghan relations (as depicted in the engraving). Meanwhile, on the Atlantic Ocean, the steamship City of Montreal was engulfed in flames. The mainmast went down at 2 pm on August 11, 1854, as shown in this engraving. Back in Europe, on August 11, 1885, the funeral of Empress Frederick took place. This black-and-white photograph captures the solemn occasion. Two more images commemorate the funeral of Empress Frederick, one in lithograph form and the other in black-and-white. August 11, 1820, saw the birth of Henri Valentin in Allarmont, Vosges. Tragically, he passed away on August 11, 1855, in Strasbourg. These diverse events, spanning continents and centuries, share the August 11 date in history.
