The 11th dynasty of ancient Egypt, which reigned during the Middle Kingdom from about 2055-1650 BCE, left behind a rich and fascinating legacy. The artifacts from this period provide us with glimpses into the lives and beliefs of these ancient Egyptians. One such artifact is the Amulet of a Female Sphinx. This intricate piece showcases the skilled craftsmanship of the time and reflects their reverence for mythical creatures. It serves as a reminder that even in ancient times, people were captivated by fantastical beings. Another remarkable item is the Kohl Jar, dating back to Dynasty 11-12 (about 2055-1773 BCE). Though its creator remains unknown, this jar gives us insight into their beauty rituals and practices. Kohl was used as eyeliner by both men and women in ancient Egypt to enhance their eyes' appearance. Scarabs also played an essential role in Egyptian culture during this era. Scarabs with inscriptions on their base offer clues about religious beliefs or personal messages conveyed through these amulets. Linear motifs found on another scarab reflect artistic styles prevalent during the First Intermediate Period-Early Middle Kingdom. Some scarabs bear titles or personal names, suggesting that they may have served as identification badges or talismans for protection against evil forces. These small yet significant objects shed light on how individuals sought to safeguard themselves in a world filled with uncertainties. Modeling everyday life was also important during this period, as seen in the Model of a River Boat from Dynasty 11-12 (about 2046-1794 BCE). This miniature boat provides insights into transportation methods along rivers like Nile while showcasing their advanced shipbuilding techniques. Additionally, tomb models were created to accompany deceased individuals on their journey to eternity. An Ancient Egyptian model depicting a boat carrying a mummy highlights their belief in an afterlife and demonstrates elaborate burial customs practiced at that time. A bas relief discovered at El-Bahrain further reveals the artistic prowess of this era.
