The 18th century, also known as the "Siècle des Lumières" or Age of Enlightenment, was a time of significant political and social change in France. The Countess of Cluzel, depicted in an exquisite oil painting from 1779, represents the elegance and opulence that characterized the aristocracy during this era. Meanwhile, the captivating view of San Giorgio Maggiore painted around 1760 transports us to Venice, showcasing the influence of Italian art on French culture during this period. The first celebration of Liberty in Paris on April 15, 1792, captured through an engraving, symbolizes the growing desire for freedom among the French people. However, this idealistic vision contrasts sharply with another engraving depicting the September Massacres later that same year – a grim reminder of how quickly revolutionary fervor can turn violent. An allusion to King Louis XVI's recall of minister Necker on August 25th, 1788 serves as a poignant representation of his attempts at reform before ultimately losing control over his reign. This event foreshadows further turmoil and upheaval that would soon engulf France. Engravings such as "Monsters" created between 1797-1799 reveal society's fascination with grotesque imagery during this tumultuous period. These images reflect both fear and curiosity about societal changes brought about by revolution. Antoine Laurent Lavoisier emerges as a prominent figure in both science and philosophy during this time. As seen through colored engravings dating back to his lifetime (1743-1794), he made groundbreaking contributions to chemistry and economics – exemplifying how intellectual pursuits flourished amidst political unrest. The French Revolution itself is central to understanding the events unfolding throughout these artworks.
