George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, was a prominent figure in English history during the early 17th century. Known for his close relationship with King James I, he rose to great power and influence as a courtier and statesman. In various artistic depictions such as "The Apotheosis of the Duke of Buckingham" and "George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham at Court in France, " we see him portrayed as a noble figure, exuding confidence and authority. These paintings capture his grandeur and status within the royal court. However, not all moments in his life were filled with glory. The engraving depicting "The assassination of the Duke of Buckingham at Portsmouth" reminds us that his life ended tragically. In 1628, he was assassinated by John Felton while stationed at Portsmouth. Despite this unfortunate end to his life, George Villiers left behind a legacy that cannot be ignored. His letter to James I showcases his political acumen and loyalty to the crown. As an influential politician and favorite of the king, he played a significant role in shaping England's foreign policy during this period. Today, George Villiers is remembered as one of England's most intriguing historical figures—a man who achieved greatness but ultimately met an untimely demise. Through these engravings and paintings from different eras like "Felton assassinating the Duke of Buckingham" or "George Villers Duke of Buckingham, " we catch glimpses into both sides: the powerful statesman admired by many and the victim whose death shocked a nation.
