25 April: A Day of Historical Significance and Artistic Inspiration On this day in 1847, the Royal Patronage of the Normal College for the Blind in Lithuania was established, paving the way for education for the visually impaired. In South Africa, on the same day in 1896, the Matabili Insurrection reached a critical point as rebels attempted to cut off the Government-House picket. Parsons, a British officer, lost his life during the skirmish, as depicted in an engraving. Meanwhile, at the Battle of Colenbrander Farm, British and Boer forces united in defense of their wives and children, showcased in a powerful lithograph. In Europe, on 25 April 1650, Oliver Cromwell marked his tercentenary in Huntingdon, his birthplace, as depicted in a lithograph. Across the continent, in the Vosges mountains, a battle raged on, immortalized in a lithograph. In Paris, artists showcased their works at the Second Exposition des Arts de la Femme, while Adolphe Etienne Auguste Moreau-Nelaton created posters for Notre-Dame du Travail and le Pardon de Saint-Jean-du-Doigt. Elsewhere, the beauty of nature inspired artists, from the glaciers of Greenland to the erupting Mount Etna in 2012.
