In the second half of the 17th century, a serene study room in Erasmus Rotterdam captures the essence of scholarly pursuits. The view from a town in Leiden during this time period showcases the charm and beauty of Dutch landscapes painted with oil on oak wood. Amidst these idyllic scenes, a loyal shepherd dog lies peacefully, symbolizing companionship and loyalty that transcends time. In another artwork depicting deer hunting in a swampy wood from the late 16th century, we catch a glimpse of ancient traditions and primal instincts. Moving forward to an enchanting wooded landscape featuring Venus and Adonis standing before Castle Beersel, we are transported to an era where love stories unfolded against picturesque backdrops. A silk fragment originating from Iran or Iraq between 1350-1399 reveals intricate craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. Similarly, a leather casket adorned with courtly love scenes transports us back to an era when romance was celebrated through artistic expression. The base seated Buddha figures alongside ascetics crafted during the second half invite contemplation on spirituality and enlightenment. Finally, a head sculpted during Ghana's Akan period in Guinea Coast around the 1600s serves as a reminder of Africa's rich artistic legacy during this time.
