The Third Crusade, which took place from 1189 to 1192, was a significant event in history. It was triggered by the siege of Jerusalem in 1187 by Saladin, a renowned Muslim leader. The execution of Muslim hostages by Richard the Lionheart during this crusade further intensified tensions between the Christian and Muslim forces. In response to these events, King Philip Augustus of France and King Richard I of England, also known as Richard Heart of Lion, joined forces and headed towards Saint John of Acre in 1191. Along their journey, they witnessed a sign in the sky that inspired their fighters in the Holy Land. The fall of Frederick of Swabia's army during this crusade highlighted its strategic challenges. However, amidst scattered soldiers on the battlefield, there were moments when St. Francis of Assisi attempted to convert Sultan al-Kamil Muhammad al-Malik to Christianity. One notable episode occurred during the Siege of Acre from August 1189 to July 1191 when both sides engaged in intense combat. Additionally, a jousting tournament held at Ptolomais (now Acre) showcased chivalry amid war-torn surroundings. Saladin played a pivotal role throughout this period as he served as Sultan not only for Egypt but also for Syria. The Crusaders faced numerous obstacles while traversing through narrow valleys within the Taurus Mountains.
