Alexei Petrovich of Russia (1690-1718), the eldest son of Peter the Great, was a tragic figure in Russian history. His portrait, painted by various artists including Wiegel, Wortmann, Borel, and Anonymous, captures the young Tsarevich's regal presence and youthful charm. However, his life was cut short by political intrigue and power struggles. The wooden cash box bearing his image, created around 1695, is a testament to his status as heir apparent. Yet, fate had other plans. In 1718, Alexei was stripped of his title and imprisoned, following a trial documented in this title page. His portraits from different periods reflect the changing political landscape of his short-lived reign. The portrait of his wife, Charlotte of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, painted by Wortmann and Borel, underscores the brief happiness he experienced in his personal life. Ultimately, Alexei Petrovich's story is a reminder of the complexities of power and the human cost of political ambition.
