Alfonso XII of Spain, known by his full name Alfonso Francisco de Asis Fernando Pio Juan Maria de la Concepcion Gregorio Pelayo, was a prominent figure in Spanish history. He was born on November 28, 1857, to Queen Isabella II and her husband Francis of Bourbon. Alfonso XII's reign began in 1874 after the abdication of his mother. He married Maria Christina of Austria, Archduchess of Austria, and together they became the parents of several children. During his time as king, Alfonso XII faced numerous challenges and threats to his life. One such incident was the attempted assassination at Madrid which left an indelible mark on his rule. Portraits and sculptures captured Alfonso XII's regal presence throughout different stages of his life. These artistic representations showcased his dignified demeanor and royal lineage. The relationship between King Edward VII and Alfonso XII is evident through a memorial card that commemorates their connection. One painting portrays a young Alfonso XII with his teacher, highlighting the importance placed on education during this period. Another significant event depicted in engravings is King Alfonso's return to Tafalla during the War in Spain. The reception he received at Barcelona Cathedral also showcases the adoration people had for their new king.
