The alto saxophone, a beloved instrument in the world of jazz and beyond. Its soulful sound has captivated audiences for decades, with legendary musicians like Maceo Parker and Dave Sanborn showcasing its versatility and power. Brian Foskett's iconic photographs immortalize these moments, capturing the essence of their performances. In 2000, Maceo Parker took center stage with his alto saxophone, effortlessly blending funk and jazz into an electrifying performance. Foskett's lens captured every note as it soared through the air, leaving the audience in awe. Dave Sanborn followed suit in 2005, his mastery of the alto saxophone shining brightly on stage. Foskett's photograph freezes time as Sanborn pours his heart into each melody, creating a symphony that resonates deep within our souls. Foskett's lens also transported us back to 1967 when Roland Kirk graced Bexley in London as Black Prince. The image captures Kirk's passion for music as he breathes life into his saxophone; a true maestro at work. But it isn't just human musicians who have embraced this enchanting instrument. A color lithograph depicts a playful duck serenading us with its own rendition on the alto saxophone – proof that music transcends species. Jimmie Lunceford takes us back even further to 1936 with an intriguing black-and-white photograph. His poised stance exudes confidence while holding his trusty alto saxophone close to him; a symbol of dedication and artistry. Fast forward to 2008 where Roy Wiillox and Duncan Lamont join forces in Stan Reynolds Big Band’s performance at New Milton. Their synchronized melodies resonate harmoniously through their matching instruments – two altos complementing each other perfectly. Another snapshot from New Milton showcases Roy Wiillox once again in perfect harmony with Stan Reynolds Big Band.
