Amphitrite, the enchanting Greek goddess and wife of Poseidon, reigns over the vast seas with her beauty and grace. In ancient Roman times, her triumph alongside Neptune was immortalized in a stunning mosaic from the early 4th century. The talented artist Francoise Verdier also captured her triumphant spirit in an exquisite masterpiece. Dating back to 515-500 BCE, a magnificent water jar created by the Leagros Group showcases Amphitrite's significance as she is depicted on this hydria. Her presence is felt even on ancient coins like the drachm from 216-203 BCE where she appears as a nymph. Lambert-Sigisbert Adam's bust transports us to c. 1725 when her divine features were sculpted with utmost precision. She exudes power and elegance that befits a goddess of such stature. In naval traditions, crossing the equator becomes an extraordinary rite of passage for sailors. As they undergo this transformational experience they can playfully greeted by fellow crew members dressed as sea gods Neptune, Amphitrite, and Triton - reminding them of their connection to these mythical beings who rule over the oceans. The mythological world intertwines with reality on a marble sarcophagus relief depicting Prometheus' story where we catch glimpses of Amphitrite's influence amidst other captivating tales. Her allure continues to captivate artists throughout history; chromolithographs bring forth vibrant renditions showcasing her ethereal beauty while black chalk drawings heightened with white chalk depict another grand Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite from 1706-07. As part of the Nereids - sea nymphs who accompany Poseidon - Amphitrite holds immense significance within Greek mythology. Her essence permeates through time and artistry, leaving us mesmerized by her eternal charm and role as queen consort to Poseidon – god of all things oceanic.
