At Fowl House Farm in Witley, the picturesque countryside comes alive with the harmonious presence of an animal herder. With children frolicking nearby and a flock of sheep grazing peacefully, this scene captures the essence of rural life. In "The Lamb" from 1789, depicted through hand-coloured relief-etching and watercolour, we witness the tender connection between shepherd and lamb. The herder's gentle touch is mirrored in "A Shepherd Weeping on a Tomb Erected to a Gnat" from 1808, portrayed with oil on canvas. This poignant artwork showcases not only the shepherd's compassion but also his profound empathy for all creatures. "The Frozen Sheepherder, " painted in 1900 using oil on canvas, transports us to harsh winter conditions where our resilient herder braves freezing temperatures to protect his flock. Meanwhile, "The Shepherdess; La Bergere, " rendered on canvas with oil paint, exudes grace and serenity as she tends to her sheep. Through pencil and watercolour strokes in "A Sheep Lane near Woburn, Bedfordshire, " we are transported down idyllic country lanes alongside our dedicated animal caretaker. In contrast, "The Goatherd" captivates us with its vibrant portrayal of goats being guided by their vigilant guardian. With charcoal on paper laid down on board in "Shepherdess" from 1877 or oil on canvas in "Shepherdess" from 1890, these artworks celebrate the strength and resilience embodied by women who take up this noble profession. From religious depictions such as "The Nativity with the Adoration of Magi and Shepherds" to pastoral scenes like "Women in a Field of Willows, " artists throughout history have celebrated the role of shepherds as guardians entrusted with guiding their flocks towards safety and abundance.
