The araucaria, also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), is a fascinating and endangered species that has captivated nature enthusiasts for centuries. Picture No. 10889141 showcases the majestic beauty of this ancient tree, which dates back to the time of Jurassic reptiles, dinosaurs, fish, and birds. From the stand of Monkey Puzzle trees in Conguillo National Park on lava flows to the gardens of Dunvegan Castle in Isle of Skye, Scotland, these unique trees can be found in various breathtaking locations around the world. In Neuquen Province's Lanin National Park in Argentina lies an awe-inspiring sight - a towering Araucaria / Monkey Puzzle / Chile Pine Tree standing tall against the backdrop of Lanin Volcano. The araucaria's distinctive appearance with its spiky leaves arranged symmetrically along its branches makes it easily recognizable. Its scientific name "imbricata pavon" further emphasizes its intricate pattern. Another variety worth mentioning is Araucaria columnaris & A. Heterophyllo - both equally captivating specimens. These Norfolk Island pine trees (Araucaria heterophylla) near a lagoon with Mount Lidgbird create a picturesque scene that seems straight out of a postcard-worthy destination. Even early 1900s Cornwall had its share of araucarias; Stencoose or St Coose was home to these magnificent trees that added charm to their surroundings. While appreciating their aesthetic value is important, we must not forget about conservation efforts for this endangered species. With their numbers dwindling due to habitat loss and illegal logging activities, it becomes crucial for us to protect and preserve these living relics from our planet's past.
