Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, a man whose life and tragic death would forever alter the course of history. In these captivating images, we catch glimpses of his final moments before the fateful event that would ignite the flames of World War I. The first image portrays an anonymous artist's depiction of the assassination itself - Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his beloved wife, Duchess Sophia, falling victim to Gavrilo Princip's bullets. The black and white photograph taken shortly before their demise shows them in Sarajevo, unaware of the impending doom that awaits them. An engraving captures the exact moment when Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo by Princip. This chilling scene is further depicted in a lithograph where we witness their lives being abruptly cut short on June 28th, 1914. Le Petit Journal provides us with a color lithograph showcasing this pivotal event - an act that would plunge nations into chaos. It was here that Gavrilo Princip forever etched his name into history as he took away not only two lives but also set off a chain reaction leading to unimaginable devastation. Another anonymous creator brings us an image capturing Gavrilo Princip's arrest after committing this heinous crime. The subsequent black and white photograph showcases him being apprehended for his actions in Sarajevo. Moving away from those haunting scenes, we glimpse Archduke Franz Ferdinand himself in a portrait from 1902 by Carl Pietzner. His dignified presence shines through as he gazes confidently at the viewer. Serajevo becomes synonymous with tragedy as it serves as both backdrop and witness to this historic event. A photograph reveals its streets where Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand met his untimely end - igniting flames that engulfed nations far beyond Yugoslavia's borders. In another image from around 1910, we see Archduke Franz Ferdinand exuding regal charm while Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria accompanies him in a carriage.
