Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a renowned American sculptor, left an indelible mark on the art world with his masterful creations. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1848, he later immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. It was here that he would establish himself as one of America's greatest sculptors. One of his most iconic works is the William Tecumseh Sherman monument located in New York City. Created in 1887, this dedication showcases Saint-Gaudens' ability to capture the essence and spirit of its subject. The monument stands tall as a testament to both Sherman's military prowess and Saint-Gaudens' artistic genius. In addition to monumental sculptures like the Sherman monument, Augustus Saint-Gaudens also made significant contributions to numismatics. His design for the United States Twenty Dollar Coin, minted in 1907, remains highly regarded for its intricate details and timeless beauty. Saint-Gaudens' talent extended beyond monuments and coins; he also created stunning busts and portraits throughout his career. One notable example is Jules Bastien-Lepage's sculpture cast in copper and bronze in 1881—a true masterpiece capturing Bastien-Lepage's likeness with remarkable precision. The Adams Memorial bust modeled by Saint-Gaudens between 1892-93 exemplifies his ability to convey emotion through sculpture. This hauntingly beautiful piece serves as a poignant tribute to Marian "Clover" Hooper Adams—an intimate portrayal of grief frozen forever in time. Not limited solely to historical figures or public figures, Augustus Saint-Gaudens also immortalized individuals close to him through his work. His sculptures of Robert Louis Stevenson (modeled 1887/88) and Violet Sargent (modeled 1890) showcase not only their physical features but also their inner essence captured within each delicate curve. Amongst his many achievements is "The Puritan, " a sculpture modeled between 1883-86.
