"Capturing the Beauty of Backlit Moments: A Winning Shot in COP26 Countdown Photo Competition 2021" In this mesmerizing photograph, two little blue penguins (Eudyptula minor) stand proudly on rocks at night, their silhouettes beautifully contrasted against the dazzling lights of Melbourne city. Taken at St Kilda breakwater in Victoria, Australia, back in December 2016, this image perfectly captures the essence of being backlit. Transporting us to another world altogether is a stunning sunset scene featuring a Viking ship. The silhouette of this ancient vessel is enhanced by intricate 3D graphics that add depth and dimension to the composition. Moving from ships to ruins, we find ourselves amidst the hauntingly beautiful remains of Coventry Cathedral in Warwickshire, England. The backlit setting casts an ethereal glow over these historic structures as they stand proud against the backdrop of a fading sun. Nature's wonders are also showcased through captivating images such as tadpoles swimming beneath our gaze in Belgium. These tiny creatures belong to the common toad species (Bufo bufo), and their graceful movements are illuminated from below by gentle backlighting. The mystical ambiance continues with a gray wolf (Canis lupus) drinking amidst foggy surroundings. This enigmatic shot captures not only its majestic presence but also highlights how backlight can create an aura of mystery and intrigue. Taking flight into Hampshire's skies is a barn owl (Tyto alba), hunting under the enchantment of backlit conditions. Its wings spread wide as it glides effortlessly through twilight landscapes—a truly breathtaking sight captured within England's borders. Norway brings us yet another awe-inspiring moment where a white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) spreads its wings against radiant backlighting while water spray adds drama to its already majestic presence. Loch Maree becomes an artist's canvas during sunrise when Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) are reflected in its calm waters.
