Baron Georges Leopold Chretien Frederic Dagobert Cuvier (1769-1832), a renowned 19th century French anatomist, is famously depicted in this illustration by J. Thomson. Cuvier's groundbreaking work in comparative anatomy led to significant advancements in our understanding of the natural world. Here, he examines the skeletons of two extinct giants of the ice age: the Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus) and the Giant Mastodon. His keen eye for detail is also evident in his studies of more recent species, such as the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) and the European Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus) (PSCI2A-00126, PSCI2A-00127).
