Baron de Rosen's Departure from Yokohama marks the beginning of Russia's peace mission in 1905, led by the Baron and Serge Witte. The Russian peace commission arrived at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where the historic Treaty of Portsmouth was signed, bringing an end to the Russo-Japanese War. Baron de Rosen and Witte, key figures in the negotiations, were often seen in the palm garden at the Wentworth Hotel and in automobiles, while diplomats and newspaper men eagerly followed their every move. Portraits of the envoys, including Baron Komura and Kogoro Tamonosuke, were captured by photographers, and the signing of the treaty was celebrated in postcards. The peacemakers, including the Russians, finally left Portsmouth, but their legacy of peace endured.
