The Baroque period, spanning from the 17th to the early 18th century, was a time of grandeur and opulence in art, and is characterized by its dramatic use of light and shadow, intricate details, and emotional intensity. One notable artwork from this era is "The Continence of Scipio" by an unknown artist. Painted around 1706, this oil on canvas masterpiece depicts the Roman general Scipio sparing a beautiful woman who had been offered to him as a prize. The painting showcases the Baroque style with its rich colors and dynamic composition. Another captivating piece is "Saint Joseph of Cupertino in Ecstasy, " also an oil on canvas painting. This work portrays Saint Joseph levitating in a state of religious ecstasy. The artist skillfully captures the intense emotions through his meticulous attention to detail and masterful brushwork. In contrast, "Detail of The Entry of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa into Arras" showcases the grandeur associated with royalty during this period. Created around 1685, this oil on canvas artwork highlights the pomp and splendor surrounding important events such as royal processions. Unfortunately, not all artworks have survived over time like "Saint Matthew and the Angel. " Although destroyed, it was once an exquisite example of Baroque artistry depicting Saint Matthew receiving divine inspiration while writing his gospel. Artists also turned their skills towards self-portraits during this period. One such example is a self-portrait created between 1712-1730 that exudes confidence and self-assurance through its detailed rendering. Portraiture played a significant role in capturing individuals' essence during this era as seen in "Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria. " Painted in 1606 by an unknown artist using oil on canvas technique; it immortalizes Marchesa's elegance with lavish clothing adorned with pearls. Religious themes were prevalent throughout Baroque art as demonstrated by "Saint Francis in Prayer.
