The bass guitar, a beloved instrument in the world of music, has captivated audiences for decades. From iconic musicians to festive Victorian cards, its influence is undeniable. One notable bass guitar that stands out is the Bootsy Collins Space Bass guitar owned by none other than Bootsy Collins himself. This extraordinary instrument made its debut in July 2002 and continues to mesmerize fans with its unique design and powerful sound. Another memorable moment in bass guitar history took place at Ronnie Scotts in London back in 1999. Steve Swallow showcased his incredible talent on stage, leaving the audience awestruck. The artist responsible for capturing this captivating performance was Brian O'Connor, whose artistic skills perfectly captured the essence of Swallow's musical prowess. Speaking of signature instruments, the Stanley Clarke Signature Standard 4 String Bass deserves recognition. Created by Gotoh Gut Co after 1990, this masterpiece combines craftsmanship and innovation to deliver an exceptional playing experience. But it's not just musicians who appreciate the beauty of bass guitars; even Victorian Christmas cards featured these enchanting instruments. One card depicts cats dancing with musicians at a ball while another showcases cat musicians playing amidst falling snow - both charming scenes that transport us back to a simpler time. And let's not forget about Father Christmas himself. In one Victorian greeting card from c. 1880, he dresses up as Old King Cole alongside ducks while holding a bass guitar - truly showcasing how this instrument transcends time and brings joy to all. Moving into more contemporary times, we have Xhosa Cole Quartet performing at Watermill Jazz Club in Dorking. With Xhosa Cole leading on saxophone and Jay Phelps accompanying on trumpet while James Owston holds down the rhythm on bass guitar - their harmonious melodies filled the air with pure magic. Tom Herbert also left his mark on Verdict Jazz Club in Brighton during December 2019 with his band Zone-B.
