The Battle of Bomarsund in 1854 was a pivotal moment in the Crimean War. This engraving depicts the meticulously planned fortifications and positions of Russian ships at Bomarsund in the Aland Islands. The allied forces, led by General Baraguay d'Hilliers, launched a relentless bombardment on June 21, 1854, as shown in another engraving. The fortifications, however, proved to be formidable, and the battle raged on for several days. The arrival of additional allied forces on July 22, 1854, ultimately led to the Russians' surrender. This series of engravings offers a glimpse into the strategic planning and intense fighting that marked this significant military engagement.
