"The Battle of Cape St Vincent: A Historic Clash of Naval Powers" In this captivating litho artwork, the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797 comes to life. The engraving showcases the intense naval engagement between British and Spanish fleets off the coast of Portugal. As we commemorate the centenary of this momentous battle, a sense of valor and determination fills the air. Renowned artist Robert Dodd's depiction transports us back to witness Admiral Sir John Jervis leading his fleet against Spanish Admiral José de Córdoba y Ramos. The clash between these formidable forces was not forgotten throughout history. In 1833, Sir Charles Napier achieved another victory at Cape St Vincent, immortalized by DJ Pound's stunning artwork. Amongst these brave commanders stood Earl John Jervis himself, whose leadership skills were captured beautifully by H Robinson in a portrait from c1809. His strategic brilliance would forever be associated with this historic battle. Jaheel Brenton's painting captures the chaos and intensity that engulfed both sides during this fierce encounter. The valiant efforts on both sides are evident as ships maneuvered amidst cannon fire and billowing smoke. Robert Clevely's piece titled "St Valentine's Day" reminds us that it was on February 14th when destiny brought these two mighty fleets together for an epic showdown. Love may have been celebrated elsewhere, but here at Cape St Vincent, love for country fueled their fight for dominance over the seas. Amidst all this chaos, R Golding portrays a pivotal moment where boarding actions took place aboard San Nicolas and San Josef - capturing the bravery displayed by sailors from both nations as they fought hand-to-hand combat on deck. One cannot forget Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s heroic actions during this battle as he fearlessly boarded San Josef – an act depicted vividly by JJ Crew’s masterpiece. This event marked one step in Nelson’s path towards becoming a legendary figure in naval history.
