In the depths of a moonlit sea, a marooned ship stands as a haunting reminder of the perils faced by sailors. This scene from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge captures the eerie stillness that befalls those trapped in nature's grasp. As we delve into this timeless tale, we witness how even when hope seems within reach, it remains just out of grasp - "and still it neared. " The desperation felt by the protagonist is palpable as he cries out for relief, "Nor any drop to drink. " Artists throughout history have sought to capture this sense of being becalmed. In Bordighera's oil on canvas masterpiece, we are transported to an idyllic setting where time seems suspended. An engraving titled "A Yachting Cruise, becalmed" further emphasizes the frustration and helplessness experienced in such situations. Fitz Hugh Lane's 1860 painting "Becalmed off Halfway Rock" showcases a ship caught in limbo between land and sea. The calm waters mirror JMW Turner's serene depiction in his 1812 piece titled "Calm (Liber Studiorum). " Both artists skillfully convey the tranquility that can quickly transform into torment when wind fails to fill sails. Even photographs capture these moments frozen in time; one such image aptly named "CALM MOONLIT SEA" transports us back to that fateful night at sea. Another photograph shows three majestic yachts sailing gracefully through light winds - their grandeur juxtaposed against their struggle with stagnation. Gustave Doré's illustrations for "The Ancient Mariner, " created around the 1870s but popularized later on, bring Coleridge's words vividly to life once more. Through his intricate drawings, we witness both beauty and despair intertwine as sailors battle against forces beyond their control. "Becalmed" serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between man and nature.
