The Beefeaters, also known as the Yeoman Warders of the Tower, have long been an iconic symbol of British history and tradition. Dating back to the 16th century, these distinguished guards have stood watch over the Tower of London with unwavering dedication. In a captivating illustration from the Illustrated London News Silver Jubilee Number in 1935, we catch a glimpse of these stalwart warders on their way to Easter service. Their striking uniforms and proud demeanor command respect and admiration. But it is not just their appearance that sets them apart. The Tower of London holds many secrets within its ancient walls, including tales of beheadings and intrigue. As depicted in another image from this collection, only at this historic site can you find a beheaded Guy with such a head – a chilling reminder of its dark past. Taking us even further back in time is Hannah Humphrey's publication from 1804 titled "The King of Brobdingnag and Gulliver. " This enchanting artwork transports us into the world created by Jonathan Swift where giants roam. It serves as a reminder that legends like Gulliver's Travels continue to captivate our imagination centuries later. Moving forward to 1840, artist George Cruikshank brings us into The Stone Kitchen - an intricate portrayal that showcases everyday life during this era. Amidst bustling activity, one can almost hear pots clanging and smell delicious aromas wafting through the air. A black-and-white photograph captures yet another momentous occasion at the Tower – Yeoman Warders standing tall against time itself. Their presence evokes feelings of nostalgia for bygone eras while reminding us that some traditions endure throughout generations. Fast-forwarding again to more recent times, we witness King George VI inspecting these esteemed guardians during his reign. His visit highlights their continued importance within British society and their role in upholding royal traditions. Beyond their ceremonial duties, the Beefeaters have also faced challenges.
