Amidst the turbulent pages of history, the Belgic people of ancient Gaul stand out as formidable warriors. During the Gallic Wars (58 BC-50 BC), they fiercely resisted the advancing Roman legions led by Julius Caesar. The Battle on the Sambre in July 57 BC saw the Nervii tribe, with their ox-drawn wagons and brave escorts, valiantly holding off the Roman forces. Yet, the tide turned at the Battle of the Aisne later that year, where the Belgic Britons were defeated. A testament to their courage remains in the statue of Ambiorix, a legendary Belgic leader, in Tongeren, Belgium. The Cassiterides, another Belgic tribe, were renowned for their mining skills, providing the Romans with valuable resources. These events are vividly captured in coloured lithographs and engravings, preserving the legacy of the Belgic people in history.
