In this poignant cartoon, set against the backdrop of close formation during World War I, we are transported into a world where bereavement takes center stage. Apparitions of angels and the ghost of a lover offer solace to a sorrowful woman, their ethereal presence bringing moments of comfort amidst inconsolable grief. Ivan Kramskoy's 1884 masterpiece captures the raw emotions that accompany loss, reminding us of the timeless nature of human suffering. Gustave Dore's wood engraving from his illustrated Bible in 1866 depicts Ruth embracing her mother-in-law Naomi after they both become bereaved. In this tender moment, Ruth promises to stay by Naomi's side through their shared sorrow, illustrating the strength found in unity during times of despair. The ink-on-paper artwork titled "The Youngest Child's Death" transports us to an unknown time around 1865 when grief was immortalized on paper. The artist captures the heart-wrenching pain experienced by parents who have lost their beloved child, leaving them grappling with inconsolable sorrow. "W Holl's 'Behold the place where they laid him' from the 19th century invites us to contemplate a somber scene. This artwork encapsulates the desolation felt at a gravesite as mourners gather to pay respects and bid farewell to someone dear departed. An anonymous creator brings forth "Motherless, " an evocative piece dating back to c1883 (c1902). Through delicate strokes and muted colors, it portrays a world forever altered by maternal absence – highlighting how profound loss can shape one's existence. Edvard Munch masterfully conveys anguish in "The Dead Mother and Child" created between 1897-1899. With haunting imagery capturing death’s grip on life itself, Munch explores themes surrounding mortality while showcasing how losing one’s mother leaves an indelible mark on those left behind.
