Bernard de Montfaucon was a renowned French scholar and antiquarian who made significant contributions to the fields of history, archaeology, and art. His work encompassed various subjects, including medieval manuscripts, historical figures, and ancient mythology. One of his notable works involved Isabelle of Portugal, Duchess of Burgundy. She was the third wife of Philippe le Bon and played a crucial role in the political landscape during her time. Montfaucon's handcoloured lithograph depicted Isabelle based on a miniature found in the manuscript Chronicles de Monstrelet. Another intriguing figure portrayed by Montfaucon was John of Barry, Lord of Renaudie. Known also as Godefroi from Barri, he was involved in the Amboise conspiracy. Montfaucon's handcoloured lithograph captured John's likeness from a portrait. Montfaucon delved into historical events as well. He depicted the death of King Henry II of France in 1559 due to a jousting accident through a vivid colour litho print. This tragic incident left an indelible mark on French history. In addition to his historical illustrations, Montfaucon explored mythological themes such as Apollo and Juno. His artistic talent shone through his engravings depicting these gods with intricate detail and finesse. Furthermore, Montfaucon showcased his expertise in ancient civilizations by creating captivating images like The Sun and Vestal priestesses. These artworks demonstrated his deep understanding and appreciation for classical culture.
