"Bestowing: Honoring Valor, Achievements, and Devotion throughout History" In the medieval era, the act knighthood on a battlefield was a symbol of utmost bravery and skill. As depicted in Paul Lacroix's lithograph from 1880, this noble tradition recognized warriors who had slain two enemies in combat. Another form of bestowal is seen in Jacques Callot's lithograph titled "The Crowning of a Great Career. " This image captures the moment when years of hard work and dedication are rewarded with well-deserved recognition. Not limited to battles or careers alone, it also takes place within families. In "The Parents Bestow Gifts, " painted by Callot in 1635, we witness parents showering their children with love and presents as they celebrate milestones together. Religious figures have also been recipients of bestowed honors. St John of God exemplifies this notion as he selflessly dedicated his life to serving others. His unwavering devotion earned him admiration and reverence from those around him. Moving beyond individuals, religious art often depicts scenes where gifts are bestowed upon significant figures. Hans Baldung's painting "Adoration of the Magi" portrays the three wise men presenting precious offerings to baby Jesus—a symbolic act representing respect for divinity. Similarly, Taddeo di Bartolo's artwork "Epiphany" showcases the moment when gifts were presented to honor Jesus' birth—an event celebrated worldwide as a testament to faith and generosity. Historical accounts also highlight instances where power was restored through bestowment. Bernardo Strozzi's painting "Alexander the Great Restoring the Throne Usurped by Abdolomino" illustrates how Alexander reinstated rightful rulership after an unjust seizure—bestowing justice upon those who suffered under tyranny. Bestowment extends beyond power struggles; it encompasses acts of kindness too. Dorcas stands as an example—a charity worker renowned for bestowing aid and support upon the less fortunate.
