Boris Vasilievich Smirnov (1876-1945): A Prolific Artist's Journey Through Siberia in 1904 Born in Irkutsk, Boris Vasilievich Smirnov began his artistic education as a pupil at the city school. His early works reflect the diverse people and scenes of his hometown, from a merchant selling beautiful merchandise to a theatrical performance by wandering artists. Smirnov's religious beliefs as an Old Believer are reflected in his painting 'Sunday Morning before Mass.' He also taught art at the municipal school, inspiring future generations. The artist's works depict the harsh realities of life in Siberia, from migrants from New Russia to the exiled Tolstoyans. He captured the nobility of the Cossacks and the struggles of those deported in prison wagons. Despite his privileged background as a nobleman by birth and a knight of the Order of Saint Stanislaus, Smirnov's art was deeply rooted in the everyday life of the Siberian people. His paintings of the Great Siberian Road and the Krasnoyarsk Cossack offer glimpses into the rugged terrain and resilient spirit of the region. Through his art, Boris Vasilievich Smirnov captured the essence of Siberia in 1904, providing a valuable historical record of a pivotal time in Russian history.
