Step into the historic boxing ring and witness the timeless battles that have defined the sport. From the intense rematch between Harry Paulson and Tom Paddock in 1851, to Henry Thomas Alken's depiction of early 19th-century boxing in 1941, these artworks capture the raw energy and skill of fighters from a bygone era. Travel back to September 28, 1811, as you witness "The Battle Between Cribb and Molineaux, " a legendary clash that took place over two days. Feel the anticipation build as Billy Bird, a British lightweight boxer, steps into the ring on April 10, 1928. His determination is palpable as he prepares for another thrilling bout. Fast forward to July 19, 1986 - an unforgettable moment when Frank Bruno faced off against Tim Witherspoon for the WBA Heavyweight Title. The intensity is tangible as these heavyweight giants exchange blows in their quest for glory. Intriguingly contrasting with this male-dominated world of boxing are Jane Couch & Lucia Rijker - powerful women who broke barriers and paved the way for future female fighters. Their presence challenges traditional notions of gender roles within this historically masculine sport. Georges Carpentier takes center stage in George Wesley Bellows' captivating portrait from 1921. This French boxer's charisma shines through his eyes, hinting at his remarkable career inside and outside of the ring. As we explore further back in time, we encounter William Nicholson's artwork "The Boxers" from1898 (1935). This piece captures not only physicality but also emotions etched onto each fighter's face – determination mixed with vulnerability. Finally, let us delve into some monumental firsts: John Gully versus Bob Gregson in their groundbreaking battle of1807; Tom Cribbs' initial showdown with Molineaux; and Tom Spring facing Jack Langan for their inaugural fight in 1824.
