"Buraq: The Mythical Steed of Prophet Muhammad's Journey" Buraq, the legendary creature that has captivated imaginations for centuries, holds a significant place in Islamic folklore. Depicted in various artworks and manuscripts throughout history, Buraq symbolizes the miraculous night journey and ascension of Prophet Muhammad. In a mesmerizing 15th-century Arabic manuscript from Turkey, we witness Muhammad's descent into Hell alongside the Angel Gabriel. This miniature from the Book of Ascension transports us to an ethereal realm where divine encounters unfold. The Arabian Nights come alive in a vibrant color engraving from 1895. Here, Buraq takes center stage as it carries its celestial passenger through mystical landscapes filled with wonder and enchantment. A captivating painting dating back to ca. 1660-80 showcases Buraq's magnificence without revealing its creator. This fabulous creature embodies grace and power as it becomes an integral part of religious narratives passed down through generations. Amir Khusrau Dihlavi's Matla ul-Anwar (Rising Place of Lights) presents another anonymous masterpiece from around 1500. In this work, Buraq serves as a conduit between earthly realms and heavenly abodes—a bridge connecting mortal beings with divine revelations. Miraj Nameh offers glimpses into both Muhammad's ascent to Heaven and his descent into the Netherworld in two separate illustrations created anonymously in 1436. These intricate depictions transport us across time as we witness extraordinary events unfolding before our eyes. From a c. 1620 manuscript of Khamsa by Nizami comes yet another portrayal of Prophet Muhammad's night journey on Buraq—an awe-inspiring spectacle that continues to inspire devotion among believers worldwide. Persian art immortalizes the Ascension of Prophet Mohammed atop Buraq—an image that resonates deeply within Muslim culture—showcasing their reverence for their beloved prophet and the celestial journey he undertook.
