Byzantine architecture, known for its grandeur and intricate design, has left an indelible mark on the world. From the 6th Century Byzantine Sandstone Palace of Qasr ibn Wardan in Syria's Hama surroundings to the Santa Sophia mosque and fishing boats on the shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul captured in a black and white photograph from c. 1890, these structures showcase the magnificence of this architectural style. In Istanbul, a city that served as both capital of Byzantium and later as Constantinople, numerous examples can be found. An oil painting from 1907 depicts Istanbul's vibrant streets adorned with buildings that exude elegance and opulence. The Sultans Palace stands tall as a symbol of power and authority during this era. The Facade of Kahrije Dzamissi or Church of the Saviour displays exquisite craftsmanship with its detailed carvings and ornate decorations. Meanwhile, an oil painting from 1864 captures a panoramic view of Istanbul, showcasing its majestic skyline dotted with minarets and domes. One cannot discuss Byzantine architecture without mentioning Santa Sophia Mosque – an iconic masterpiece that seamlessly blends elements from Christianity and Islam. Its Great Doorway is a testament to the skillful artistry employed by architects during this period. Beyond Turkey's borders lies Piazza San Marco in Venice, where influences from Byzantium can also be seen. A graphite drawing with watercolor accents dating back to c. 1826 showcases this enchanting square adorned with stunning architectural wonders. Constantinople (now Istanbul) was not only home to magnificent structures but also bustling markets like those depicted by artists such as Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky in his work capturing a market scene with Hagia Sophia towering majestically beyond. Inside Hagia Sophia itself lies another marvel - an interior so awe-inspiring that it leaves visitors speechless.
