Step back in time to the 1950s in a London pub, where a woman barmaid skillfully pulls pints of beer for her male customers. The atmosphere is captured perfectly in black and white, with an old-fashioned cash register sitting proudly on the counter. This scene reminds us of the timeless play "The Miser" by Molier, where money plays a central role. Meanwhile, on the set of a film adaptation of a beloved TV series, actress Molly Sugden, known for her iconic role as Mrs Slocombe, can be seen interacting with an antique Portuguese cash register in Lisbon. The juxtaposition of old and new creates an intriguing visual contrast. Traveling across continents and time periods brings us to Western Washington in 1939 at Ghost Town Cafe. Dorothea Lange's lens captures not only the wooden cash register but also the essence of this forgotten era. It transports us to another world entirely. Delving deeper into history takes us to c. 1942 when Wilbur M Rice created a remarkable wooden cash register that stands as both functional machinery and exquisite craftsmanship. Its intricate details tell stories untold. Intriguingly vibrant is the chromolitho artwork depicting yet another vintage cash register from years gone by. Its colors evoke nostalgia while reminding us how technology has evolved over time. Pioneering inventors like Joseph Ficcadenti revolutionized business operations with their Hume Cash Register from around 1939. Their creations paved the way for modern-day point-of-sale systems we rely on today. Shifting gears from registers to wheels brings our attention to an unknown creator's masterpiece: a 1954 DKW Universal estate car parked alongside Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc in Wisconsin. Among its treasures lies a vintage cash register that once served countless transactions during bustling times. These glimpses into history remind us that behind every transaction lies human interaction and connection—a concept beautifully encapsulated by the cash register.
