Cashew - the Nutty Delight Did you know that they are not actually nuts, but seeds? They come from the Cashew tree, scientifically known as Anacardium occidentale. Native to northeastern Brazil, these delectable treats have become a popular snack worldwide. Ulisse Aldrovandi, an Italian naturalist from the 16th century, was captivated by cashews and even published a plate featuring them. This shows how long humans have been fascinated by this unique seed. The beauty of nature is truly astonishing when we discover that certain butterflies like the Amber Phantom (Haetera piera) rely on cashew trees for their survival. These trees provide shelter and sustenance for these delicate creatures. Speaking of sustenance, cashews themselves are packed with nutrients. They contain healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins such as E and K, and minerals like copper and magnesium. Including them in your diet can contribute to overall well-being. The Cashew nut tree is a sight to behold with its lush green leaves and vibrant fruits hanging delicately from its branches. It thrives in tropical climates where it can reach heights of up to 12 meters. No wonder it has earned the nickname "cashew nut tree. " Interestingly enough, there are other trees associated with cashews too. The Gum Arabic tree shares its habitat with cashews in some regions while Ceylon satinwood trees also grow alongside them. Nature's diversity never ceases to amaze us. Intriguing historical records show that Senegal Gum Arabica was depicted alongside cashew trees in colored engravings dating back to 1833-39. This highlights the cultural significance of these plants throughout history. If you ever find yourself wandering through India's bustling capital city of New Delhi, make sure to visit the spice market in Old Delhi where you'll witness an impressive display of various nuts including our beloved cashews. The vibrant colors and aromas will leave you in awe.
