A castle is a large fortified structure, typically built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Castles were used to protect against invaders and provide a safe place for people to live. They were often surrounded by moats, walls, and towers with drawbridges that could be raised or lowered as needed. Inside the castle walls was a courtyard with buildings such as a chapel, stables, storehouses, barracks for soldiers, and living quarters for the lord of the castle. Castles also had defensive features such as arrow slits in their walls that allowed archers to fire arrows at attackers from inside the safety of their walls. Castles served not only as fortresses but also as symbols of power and wealth for those who lived within them.
