Catherine of Alexandria, also known as St Catherine of the Wheel and the Great Martyr Catherine, is a prominent figure in history. She was famously depicted in various artworks throughout different time periods. One such historical depiction showcases the disputation of St Catherine before Petronius Maximus, the Western Roman buffy-tufted marmoset. This painting, found in the House of Borgia, captures an intense moment where her faith is put to test. Another notable artwork portraying her martyrdom dates back to 1605-06. Painted on canvas, it vividly portrays the sacrifice she made for her beliefs. The artist skillfully captured both her physical pain and spiritual strength. In a tempera on wood masterpiece from 1355, we see Madonna and Child enthroned with not only St Mary Magdalen but also St Catherine of Alexandria surrounded by angels. It beautifully depicts their divine connection and heavenly presence. Similarly, another tempera on wood piece from around 1487-86 showcases Madonna and Child enthroned with saints including St Catherine of Alexandria. The intricate details highlight their importance within religious iconography. The mystical marriage of St Catherine is portrayed in a captivating oil-on-wood painting dating between 1501-1550. It explores themes of spirituality and devotion through its ethereal composition. Fra Bartolomeo's Assumption of the Virgin with St John the Baptist and St Catherine of Alexandria (1516) captivates viewers with its vibrant colors and masterful brushstrokes on panel. It conveys a sense of awe-inspiring divinity. Pellegrino Tibaldi's Holy Family with St Catherine further immortalizes this saint's significance through his remarkable use of oil on canvas technique during circa 1549-53. Depositions were often depicted in art during that era; one such example is Christ's Deposition painted around 1592 using oil on wood.
