Cecil J Rhodes: A Visionary and Controversial Figure Cecil J Rhodes, an English-born South African entrepreneur and statesman, left an indelible mark on history. Known as the "Rhodes Colossus, " his influence stretched far and wide, shaping the destiny of nations. In 1892, artist Edward Linley Sambourne captured Rhodes' larger-than-life persona in a striking portrait titled "The Rhodes Colossus. " This depiction perfectly encapsulated his ambition to connect Africa from Cape to Cairo. The artwork showcased his determination to leave no stone unturned in realizing this grand vision. One of Rhodes' notable achievements was the establishment of Groote Schuur, a magnificent estate where he resided. A color lithograph depicted him at this iconic location, radiating power and authority. It served as a testament to his success as both a businessman and politician. Beyond politics, it also had a passion for agriculture. His fruit farm at Paarl became renowned for its productivity and innovation. Another vibrant lithograph showcased this venture's prosperity while highlighting Rhodes' dedication to economic development. A black-and-white photograph captured Groote Schuur's timeless beauty against the backdrop of Rondebosch in South Africa. It offered a glimpse into the tranquil sanctuary that provided solace amidst his busy life. "The Train Conveying the Remains of Mr. Rhodes Saluted by Blockhouse Guards" immortalized one of history's most poignant moments – Cecil J Rhode's funeral procession after his passing in 1902. This image symbolized not only mourning but also reverence for a man who had shaped an era with unwavering determination. Rhodes' political career earned him recognition beyond South Africa's borders; he was appointed Privy Counsellor (P. C. ) in 1900 by Queen Victoria herself. Elliot & Fry masterfully captured this momentous occasion through their lens, showcasing Rhodes' statesmanlike presence.
