"Charles X: The Rise and Fall of a French Monarch" Charles X, born in 1757, was destined for greatness as he ascended the throne of France. In 1825, amidst great pomp and ceremony, he was crowned King at Reims, swearing to uphold the Charter that would guide his reign. This momentous occasion was captured in a stunning drawing by Ambroise Tardieu. During his rule, Charles X faced numerous challenges and made significant decisions that shaped his legacy. One such decision involved Mulhouse in Alsace; Charles X ensured its inclusion within the kingdom's borders, leaving an indelible mark on the region's history. Known for his love of hunting and outdoor pursuits, Charles X participated in a Royal Hunt at the pond of Tour Rambouillet on September 18th, 1826. This picturesque scene was beautifully depicted in a watercolor painting. The king's regal presence is evident in various portraits and engravings capturing his likeness. A lithograph from 1825 portrays Charles-Philippe before he became King Charles X of France while a colored engraving showcases him wearing royal attire. However, not all moments were filled with grandeur and celebration. The Revolution of 1830 brought about tumultuous times for Charles X. As tensions escalated between him and the National Guard, an engraving depicts him presenting himself to them during this pivotal event. Ultimately, political unrest forced Charles X into exile. Depicted boarding a ship bound for England on August 15th, 1830; another engraving captures this somber moment when he bid farewell to his homeland forever. A cartoon illustrating his exile further emphasizes the downfall of this once-mighty monarch who found himself cast aside by revolutionary forces just months after departing French shores. Yet even before ascending to power or facing adversity abroad; young Charles Philippe d'Artois had already experienced brushes with the French Revolution.
