"Chastisement: A Reflection on Discipline and Punishment throughout History" From boys scrumping apples to biblical tales of punishment, it has taken various forms across time. In the painting "Sisyphus, " we witness the eternal struggle of a man condemned to roll a boulder uphill, only for it to roll back down again—an allegory for the futility of certain punishments. At Westminster School, Dr Busby settles accounts with Master Billy and his playmates in an engraving depicting discipline within educational institutions. Coles Patent Whipping Machine showcases a disturbing invention designed for flogging naughty boys—a stark reminder of harsh disciplinary practices. In Leonid Terentievich Chupyatov's painting "La petite fille sur un cube, " we see a young girl perched on a cube, perhaps contemplating her own transgressions or awaiting reprimand. Meanwhile, Goya's "Los caprichos: Woman in Prison" portrays the anguish and suffering endured by those imprisoned as part of their chastisement. Henri Bles' haunting piece titled "L'enfer" depicts hellish torment—a chilling reminder that some believe divine retribution awaits wrongdoers. Similarly, Ivan Mazepa's fate is sealed when caught committing adultery; he is tarred and bound naked onto a wild horse that carries him into the Ukrainian steppes—an extreme form of public humiliation. Nikolai Petrovich Lomtev's artwork captures an autodafe scene—ecclesiastics and crowds gather around a burning pyre after an inquisition trial—a vivid representation of societal punishment driven by religious fervor. Hieronymus Bosch's "Descente aux Enfers - The Harrowing of Hell" presents us with Bosch’s interpretation of Christ descending into hell to free souls from eternal damnation—an act seen as both redemption and chastisement.
