Chemulpo, Korea, circa 1880s: A bustling harbor town on the western coast of Korea, Chemulpo (now known as Incheon) was a significant trading port during the late 19th century. The panoramic view of Incheon with its gaze towards Chemulpo Bay showcases the city's strategic location and natural beauty. During the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905, Japanese troops landed on the shores of Chemulpo, marking a crucial moment in history. The landing of these troops played a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of this conflict. The defensive alliance between England and Japan solidified Japan's sphere of influence in Korea, with Chemulpo serving as one of its principal treaty ports. This lithograph depicts how important this city was for international trade and political relations at that time. The victorious squadron led by "Asama" at Chemulpo is captured beautifully in this black-and-white photograph. These naval forces were instrumental in securing victory for Japan during their operations here. After the Battle Bay, where Japanese forces clashed with Russian sailors from cruiser Varyag, a touching scene unfolds through this color lithograph. Japanese soldiers pay their final respects to fallen Russian sailors – an image that speaks volumes about honor and respect even amidst war. Another lithograph portrays Japanese troops making landfall on the beach at Chemulpo during wartime. This depiction highlights both bravery and determination exhibited by these soldiers while fighting for their cause. Amidst all these historical events lies Dr Landis and his school at Chemulpo – an educational institution that stood witness to changing times. This black-and-white photo captures not just buildings but also stories etched within them - tales of knowledge imparted against a backdrop filled with uncertainty yet hope. Lastly, we see a general view of Port Chemulpo - showcasing its vibrant atmosphere as ships come and go while traders engage in commerce.
