Christian II: The Controversial King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden Christian II was a prominent figure in the history of Scandinavia during the 16th century. As the King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, his reign was marked by both triumphs and tragedies. In engravings depicting Christian II, we see a regal figure with an air of authority. His portrait on wood showcases his power and influence over these three nations. However, it is not just his appearance that defines him; it is also the events that unfolded during his rule. One engraving captures the defeat of Christian II's fleet. It serves as a reminder that even powerful rulers face setbacks and challenges. Another engraving shows Christina Gyllenstierna presenting him with a letter of safe conduct before their meeting. This encounter highlights diplomatic efforts amidst political turmoil. There were darker aspects to Christian II's reign as well. In Eilif Peterssen's painting "Christian II Signing the Death Warrant of Torben Oxe, " we witness a moment stained with tragedy – an act that would forever haunt this king's legacy. Various portraits offer glimpses into Christian II's life at different stages. An anonymous artist captured him around 1700 when he was already long gone from this world but still remembered for his impact on Scandinavian history. Another portrait from the first half of the 16th century depicts him in all his royal glory while another one from 1523 reflects perhaps weariness or contemplation after years spent ruling multiple kingdoms, and is through these images that we can piece together fragments of Christian II's complex story – a ruler who experienced both triumphs and defeats; whose actions left lasting impressions on Scandinavia; whose name continues to be debated among historians to this day.
