"Cigare: A Journey Through Time and Culture" Step into the past with these captivating illustrations and engravings that depict the fascinating history of cigare. From the iconic Michelin man, illustrated in a charming 1930s style, to an engraving of Michelin Bibendum, this collection takes us back to a time when smoking was not only fashionable but also celebrated. Intriguingly, we find ourselves in the White House alongside American President Ulysses Grant and Uncle Sam as they share a beer against a wall inscribed with "third term. " This political cartoon from yesteryears adds another layer to our understanding of cigare's place in society. Venturing further, we stumble upon an enchanting village called Comalcalco where two young children are depicted precociously smoking. The engraving by A. Sirouy transports us to 1880 Mexico, illustrating Desire Charnay's scientific mission for the Ministry of Public Education. The struggle for workers' rights is brought to life through an illustration depicting Venice's cigar workers on strike. Created by A. Beltrame, it sheds light on the laborious process of handcrafting cigars while highlighting social issues faced by these skilled artisans. Ensign Johnny Newcome provides comic relief as he learns to smoke cigars and drink grog with fellow officers. Thomas Rowlandson's handcoloured copperplate engraving captures both hilarity and excessiveness at the dining table – reminding us that moderation is key even when indulging in life's pleasures. A majestic lion proudly represents Paris while vignettes signed by JJ Granville add artistic flair to our journey through cigare's history. We explore commerce between France and USA, witness grand dinners held for ambassadors, and discover tobacco warehouses like Bethune dock – all integral parts of this timeless tradition.
