"The City Imperial Volunteers: Citizen Soldiers in Service of the Empire" In an era marked by patriotism and a sense of duty, the City Imperial Volunteers stood tall as a testament to the unwavering spirit of London's citizens. With their motto "God Speed the CIV. " echoing through the streets, these brave men embarked on a noble mission to serve their country. The lithograph titled "Welcome to Our Citizen Soldiers" captures the essence of camaraderie and unity that defined this remarkable group. As they departed on 26 January, another litho titled "Departure of the Second Detachment" immortalizes their departure with pride and determination etched on each face. Honored for their selflessness, these freemen were granted the Freedom of the City at Guildhall on Friday, 12 January. The lithograph entitled "Freemen for the Front" showcases this momentous occasion when London bestowed its highest honor upon these valiant individuals. Their journey was not without sacrifice; some returned wounded but unbowed. In poignant scenes depicted in lithographs like "Invalided Home, " we witness their resilience and indomitable spirit as they triumphantly return from battle. Londoners eagerly awaited their heroes' homecoming, as portrayed in artworks such as "Home Again. " The city rejoiced at seeing its sons reunited with loved ones after facing adversity far from home. At St Pauls before Nelson's Monument, another striking image emerges - one that exemplifies both reverence and gratitude towards these gallant soldiers who fought bravely during The War in Transvaal. Their presence near such hallowed ground is a testament to their valor. Leadership played an integral role within this esteemed unit. Colonel W H Mackinnon stands resolute in his black-and-white photograph titled "The Leaders of CIV. " His guidance ensured that every soldier under his command would be prepared for any challenge thrown at them. Tragedy struck during this conflict, and the fallen were not forgotten.
